Shy'm: "Spicy Tam"

Shy'm: "Spicy Tam"
By: Jordanna Segal

Shy'm was born as Tamara Marthe in Trappes. Ever since she was young, she had a liking of singing and dancing. She took dancing lessons as a child, and she was nicknamed "Spicy Tam" because of the effort that she put into it. She earned her diploma at the age of seventeen. All throughout high school she was recording demos, but wanted to avoid the public eye.

Later when she went to Paris she sent the recordings to record companies. It was here that she was discovered by rapper, K'Maro. Tamara gained her stage name of "Shy'm" by her journey to fame. Shy'm is made from her being shy and Martinique. She was inspired by her loving of the arts. She is a mix of pop and R&B. Her solo album, which was released in 2006, was named Mes Fantaisies. The album reached number six on the French chart, and four songs from the album have been released as singles. All of the singles went on the top ten list in France. She has not received any awards.

                          En Aspesanteur

1. What about your musician's sound do you like? How does the sound affect your mood? What does the sounds remind you of?

I like that her music is mostly upbeat and her videos are funky. Even though I can't understand what she is singing about, there is a continuous beat that flows nicely together. Her songs make you feel more lively and make you want to get up and dance. Her music reminds me of Rihanna in a way. The sounds of a bass drum are clearly heard in "En Apesanteur."

2. What does your musician sing about? *What are some of the major themes of subjects of the songs? If they do not sing, how can you interpret the music or sound?

She sings about finding love and love that is recurring. She also sings about marriage between two different races. Her top three major themes of her songs are finding love, recurring love, and intermarriage along with its success. Her music is unique with its positive sound, yet her music is speaking about something negative. All in all I think her music sounds good and if I could understand it, I think I would like it.
